HISTARCH,
I am looking to complete a project on Hills Bros. coffee tin can
chronology. As some of you know, Hills Bros. coffee cans changed in style
and lettering of lithography through time, starting with the first vacuum
packed coffee cans in 1900. We are getting quite close to finishing this
project, but need more-complete cans for the early period than we presently
possess. The goal of the project is to produce a field guide booklet for
identification purposes.
Specifically, we need better information for the following three Hills Bros
coffee can types:
1900-1903, tapered can, "Highest Grade Java and Mocha"
1903-1906, straight-sided (i.e., cylindrical) cans, "Highest Grade Java and
Mocha"
1906-1914, straight-sided (i.e., cylindrical) cans, "Highest Grade Coffee"
(with or without "Vacuum Packed" on the main panel)
If anybody knows of photos, or cans in an assemblage or museum, that match
these descriptions, I would appreciate hearing from you. We already have T.
Carroll Wilson's 1967 book on the topic, and some information distributed
by Jim Rock.
Thanks,
Robin
