Based on anecdotes from Camp Locket in Campo, California during World War II,
you should expect to find all sorts of civilian artifacts in POW camps in
America. The Italian prisoners of war often worked for civilian ranchers and
walked back to camp at night. One Italian simply walked across the border to
Tecate, Mexico and married a local woman and then set up his own Italian
restaurant. The last time I visited Tecate, the spaghetti with marinara sauce was
exquisite.
