I now have available a freely distributable version of CRANID.
The purpose of the program is to assist in determining ancestry, and it has applications in forensic science, repatriation issues, and general prehistoric and historic archaeology.
Using 29 cranial measurements, the program does a linear discriminant analysis of an individual cranium. The result determines which of 66 groups of crania an individual is most like morphologically. The 66 groups comprise 2,870 crania from around the world. This database includes all the individuals that were in the database of W.W. Howells, but has additional samples from Europe, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and the extreme south of South America.
The program comes with an illustrated manual that tells the user how to collect the measurements, run the program and interpret the results.
The program runs under Windows. Not being computer intensive, Mac users should be able to run it using software such as VirtualPC.
On request I will send the 600 KB file CR5Ind.zip as an email attachment. Being freely distributable, no charge is made for the program and it may be copied and passed on to students and others.
