The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, under "Largo" says that according
to some 18th Century theorists largo (broad) is the slowest tempo, though
then and later it was often placed between adagio and andante. Under
"Performance marks," the same source gives the ordering: grave, largo,
lento, adagio, andante, moderato, allegretto, allegro, vivace and presto.
