I was startled to hear, in the early hours of this morning, some really
gorgeous music, which seemed oh, just a tiny bit derivative, in a kind
of general way. As harmonically beautiful as Wagner, with some of the
sensibilities of other romantic composers thrown in: Schumann, Mendelssohn;
it was an overture by Siegfried Wagner.
He was Liszt's grandson, and I suppose if I knew more Liszt, I'd have
heard Liszt in the mix, too! But you know, it was very nice. It sounded
more like Meistersinger than, say, the Ring; I'd say, if you have to
take after Daddy, son, pick one of the best models, and Meistersinger
is my nominee!
