A bit of pre...pre publication information that might be of interest. The
next set will be ten discs of American Music. Talking this morning with
Sedgwick Clark, producer, the following items are part of the "short list."
Bernstein
Schuman: Symphony No.6
Copland: Orchestral Variations
Fine: Symphony
Harris: Symphony No.7
Copland: Lincoln Portrait (Warfield)
Ives: Symphony No. 2 (1st perf.)
Sessions: Violin Concerto
Szell
Copland: Symphony No.3
Barber: Essay No.1
Mennin: Symphony No.7 (a long shot)
Mitropoulos
Diamond: Symphony No.1
Rodzinski
Piston: Symphony No.2
Copland: Appalachian Spring (1st performance)
Gershwin: An American in Paris
Schelling: A Victory Ball
Barrymore: Partita
Mehta
Copland: Billy the Kid (no comment!)
Copland: Prairie Journal
Monteux
Creston: Symphony No.2
Stokowski
Herrmann: Devil and Daniel Webster
Cowell: American Piper
Kirchner
Kirchner: Piano Concerto No.2
Walter
Mason: Symphony No.2
Moore: Symphony No.2
Boulez
Copland: Connotations
Carter: Concerto for Orchestra
Cantelli
Something...
Sad to find out that not much of the Boulez years were taped by the
orchestra. Personally I find this insane!
This is all still speculative and subject to availability of decent
sounding copies, permissions, etc. Sedge also mentioned that there is
likely to be a fair amount of Copland to tie in with the 100th birthday.
More than likely there will be some Druckman, perhaps Aureole. Some of the
things I was pushing for that probably won't make it...
Mitropoulos
Schuman: Judith
Gould: Symphony No.3
Foss
Foss: Symphony of Chorales
Diamond
Diamond: Piano Concerto
Bernstein
Diamond: Symphonies 5,8
Reiner
Schuman: Prayer
Golschmann
Gould: Symphony No.2
I am happy to say that while some of my choices look like they have already
fallen by the way side, many like most of the Bernstein remain under
consideration at this point.
My guess is that the set won't appear until next year as they are still in
the listening stage.
Since many of you have an interest in American Music I thought you might
like to know about this project.
