While I don't know the answer to that one, but I believe Hofmann had some
of the smallest hands of any of the "great" pianists.  As I recall he had
a special piano built with narrow keys.

As an aside, I also recall he was the first "serious" pianist to record.

He was also one of the few pianists Rachmaninoff held in high regard.
