In his book "Conversations with Karajan", Richard Osborne reports the
following remark Karajan made about Carlos Kleiber, which probably explain
why his [Kleiber's] discography is so short (I'm quoting from my version in
Portuguese):

"He [Kleiber] has gift to conduct, but he doesn't like to do it.
And he tells me: 'I conduct only when I am hungry'. And it is true.
He has a refrigerator that keeps completaly full; he cooks for himself,
and when the refrigerator starts to get empty and reachs certain
level, he thinks: 'Now maybe I give a concert'. He is like a wolf!
But he is someone I have the greatest admiration".
