Seems to me that a priori separation of foods and beverages could be creating a false dichotomy. Clearly, some beverages are not food items; addictions notwithstanding, Jack Daniels and Corona should probably not be considered manufacturers of foods (alcoholic beverages are, in the OAS framework, recorded as indulgences). On the other hand, milk from non-human critters, which is a beverage, has been and continues to be consumed as a food itself and as a part of other foods.
I'm wondering about recording archaeological remains of containers for mother's milk . . . but that's probably a different issue.
Morgan, I'd like to get a copy of your paper when you find it, if possible.

I prepared a long lecture regarding milk-drinking habits in the U.S. an then managed to lose it on the Explorer--I''ll send it if If I find it. Meanwhile, I adhere to the notion that breast milk is food, but after weaning, milk is a beverage. The dairy lobby notwithstanding, that seems a reasonable classification.
