Why?  These were elementary school kids, not adults.  They placed the
items in the capsule that were important to them.  Does a time capsule
have to be a political/social representation of the whole country in
order to be a "good" one?

A good time capsule of 1968 should contain something about the Civil
Rights  
Movement, Kennedy Assassination, Viet Nam War, and other social
upheavals that 
 marked that particular time period...other than bikinis and cursed Coke

bottles.
