More importantly, where can you get heart redwood? Much of the lumber
shipped to Southern California before World War II came on log rafts by sea and the
local mills ripped off the soft, white, outer layers to cut their full-cut
lumber out of the center. They preferred this because the growth rings were
tighter, sap richer, and termites hated it. Also, heart redwood is fire
resistant. All the houses with heart redwood that were built in the 1900-1920s in
San Diego are still relatively termite free. Now days, nothing is ripped off
the log but the bark.
