Greetings,
I have been asked by one of our architectural historians to post the
following:
I have been researching a pair of dams in northern Wisconsin known
locally as "rock roller" or "rock check" dams. These structures, which
may have been constructed as WPA projects, extend the width of the river
and are comprised of stacked stones (rocks). The larger stones tend to
be carefully placed to facilitate stacking while the smaller stones are
used to fill gaps and add height to the two structures. In addition to
the stone dam, each structure originally included a wooden chute at the
center, so canoeists wouldn't have to portage around the dam. I have
identified at least one additional dam of the same construction type in
the area (northern Wisconsin), but know of no others outside the region.
What I am trying to discover now is if any dams of this type are listed
on the NRHP, or have any type of protective measures placed on them.
Since it may be difficult to understand just what these dams look like,
there are photos coming soon on our web page so anyone interested can
check them out. Go to www.ccrginc.com, and scroll to the bottom of the
home page-or just click on the news arrow to go right to the images.
Thanks for your assistance,
