I have just acquired yet another French book some Histarchers might be
interested in, M. Augeron et D, Guillemet (eds), Champlain ou les portes
du Nouveau Monde. Geste editions (c. 50 Euros). Its a big edited
semi-popular encyclodedia-ike account of the Atlantic trade between
France and North America from the 16th-20th century uincluding the ports
and cultural impacts etc. Its written by a host of leading experts. Lots
of nice ilustrations and even a bit of archaeology eg a couple of pages
by Chapelot on the ceramic trade. Now back to the 15th century Saintonge
pegau (wide jug) I have sudenly realised I have scattered through 14
contexts at Haverfordwest priory-in SW Wales. Not sure its telling me
anything though other than how crowded and disturbed British
stratigraphy always is- nor do we get many of those nice cesspit
asemblages the Dutch are awash with.
