Updates on the About Archaeology website

Maya Site Q Found
http://archaeology.about.com/od/mayaarchaeology/a/siteq.htm
A newly discovered stone panel at the Classic Period Maya (AD 250-900)
capital city called La Corona in Guatemala has given researchers at Yale
University enough evidence to confidently identify it as the long-sought
city called Site Q.

Writing a Research Paper in Archaeology
http://archaeology.about.com/od/methods/tp/essay_help.htm
Writing a research paper in archaeology may seem like a daunting task, if
you are new to the field or just learning about a site or culture. But it
needn't be. This five step short course from picking a topic to writing that
final draft, will put you on the right road to making your paper original,
thoughtful and interesting.

Ongoing Creationist Intelligent Design Debate
Evolution and Intelligent Design
http://geology.about.com/b/a/205648.htm
Teaching ID in a science class is such a bad idea, to insist that teachers
teach something that has no evidence for it whatsoever--and never will--that
I find myself speechless. Either that or ranting at the top of my voice that
if this passes, the next generation of adults will be unable to
differentiate between science and religion, and just when we need them. The
world is an unstable place, and writing off whole chunks of it because "the
watchmaker" is more complicated than we can imagine is just a huge copout
from our responsibilities to attempt to make the world livable for all the
people who live on it, not just those that call themselves Christians and
believe they will be saved in the afterlife. (ahem). See? Can't be done.
Fortunately, Andrew has it covered.

Now, on the other hand, science writer Michael Balter has an interesting
point in this article of his published in the LA times:
http://archaeology.about.com/b/a/208302.htm
The Los Angeles Times published a commentary by science writer Michael
Balter who believes we shouldn't be afraid to bring the debate about science
and evolution into the public arena, and into the science classes.

Bruce,
Carol told me that you'd be interested to see this add. There are about
four or five jobs being offered this year in historical archaeology. I'm
shocked at the number. This one includes a salary range. Interesting for
comparison.
Cheers,
Tim

Hey! Sorry about the mis-forwarding of the UWF position =20 announcement...
A little additional advertising for them. As a =20 restorative, I've sent
out our position announcement again in this =20 note. Several people
emailed me to ask, so I should point out that =20 this is not a replacement
for me. This job is to fill the line for =20 which we interviewed
candidates in 2002-3, but lost temporarily due =20 to budget cuts. The line
has been restored and we now expect to =20 bring another archaeologist to
join the IA faculty at Michigan Tech =20 in conjunction with our new Ph.D.
in Industrial Heritage and =20 Archaeology.

Behave yourself Mary. Do not fractionalize the field. RLS

If the field gets fractionalized because someone points out a spelling
error, that would surely be a shame.

Subject: First Nation's Priorities in CRM

Please forgive xposting.=20

We are organizing a symposium for the meetings of the Society for = Applied
Anthropology in Vancouver, British Columbia (May 28-April 2, 2006). The =
topic is fairly broad, but the idea is to get museum folks, education types,
anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, general CRMers, and other =
tribal and agency folks together to share how we are doing CRM.=20

=20

**Note the abstract deadline. =20

**Note you must submit abstracts to SfAA _as well as_ Diane or I.=20

**Please forward this to anybody else you think might be interested as =
well.

=20

Thanx for your consideration.=20

Changing Cultural Resource Management to meet First Nations' Priorities

Indigenous groups of North America have reclaimed the prerogative to =
present and study their history based on their priorities. The requirements
of cultural heritage laws and government-to-government consultation =
integrate First Nations' interests into modern cultural resource management
= practices.
Improving economic positions of North American tribes and businesses has =
also led to opportunities to reclaim control over the way precontact and =
contact history is presented to the general public through cultural heritage
programs, stewardship programs, cultural resource managers and museums. =

=20

If you would like to be part of this symposium, the abstract deadline is
Ocober 15. You will need to send a copy of your abstract to Margan = Grover
([log in to unmask]) or Diane Hanson
([log in to unmask]), and register for the conference and submit your
abstract with them as well. Co-authors will need to register =
individually.
Instructions about registering and abstract submission can be found at
http://www.sfaa.net/sfaa2006/2006instruct.html.

For more information about the symposium please contact Margan Grover or
Diane Hanson at the e-mail addresses above.

Just a joke, Mary. "Fractionalized".

By the way, you probably already announced this twenty times but who are
the SHA Award recipients in Sacramento?
Could you put out a list here for all our colleagues as an encouragement to
go to the ceremony.

We "old timers" WILL all be at the banquet and ceremony. Looks like a big
meeting with really interesting (Preliminary Program) sessions and papers.
I am also going to Alcatraz.
