i don't want to single anyone out here, but i've started wondering of late: does the archaeological interest/obsession in status somehow relate to a similar interest in archaeological/academic real life? the perks you get for being a professor emeritus, for example, or whatever other substitutes we take for not being able to afford the expensive cars & yachts all the kids we went to school with who didn't study archaeology manage to indulge in...
