With regard to Mitch Friedfeld's challenge: I did NOT consult my copy
of Slonimsky, but immediately recognized quote #2, which is from a
contemporary review of Beethoven's Symphony #2.  It illustrates how
jarring (or how radical) Beethoven's contemporaries found his use of
irregular rhythms.
