I have to step in for this one. Kevin Sutton writes:
>Fanfare is only for serious advertisers as the ratio of ad pages to
>favorable reviews for advertisers products is extremely high. ARG
>is definitely the magazine of choice, Vroon and all"
As a reviewer for Fanfare for a decade or so now, I can state
categorically that the editor, Joel Flegler, has never once in that
time tried to influence any recording I have reviewed. The closest he
ever came was when he asked, after I had damned the rather dull music
on a CD from a fledgling label, if I would mind if he commissioned another
review from someone who might like it better. His concern was merely
to give the new label a chance - and he added that, if I wanted, I could
insist that my review be published and that, if the second reviewer
didn't like the CD any more than I did, he'd print my review anyway.
Compare that to the habit of Gramophone of sending proofs of reviews to
advertisers and asking if they're OK, and I think you'll agree it's
pretty mild.
Cheers
