Just be aware that some of those nasty results could be pathogenic and need
to be handled accordingly. At the very least, you need a way to kill the
microbes before disposal
My 11-year-old daughter just finished her science fair project using similar culture techniques (she was testing the antimicrobial effectiveness of UV light). She decided to construct an "incubator" using a cardboard box (nice and dark), a desk lamp shining on the box for the heat source and a small dish of water to keep the incubator environment moist-ish. This set up allowed her to achieve a 10 degree Celsius increase over room temp. We got fantastic growth within 48 hours. We disposed of the dishes by pouring a 10% bleach solution over the agar and letting it sit for 30 minutes or so before throwing the plates away.
Good luck!
