hi Martin,
I have worked several times with our neighbors, the Franklin Park Zoo and the New England Aquarium. I run a program called Critter Day, which brings in live animal programs to our museum. Boston Children's Museum has no live animal collection of our own (aside from a handful of turtles, a snake and some hissing cockroaches), and our visitors have expressed interest in animal programs. The Zoo and Aquarium have animals, of course, and are our neighbors, so it seems an obvious choice for me to call them.
I have had each of them here for a number of Critter Days, and they have been very successful. The zoo and aquarium offer something that we don't have, so I don't view it as working with "the competition," and they are of course very professional and experienced with the same kind of audience we have here. It's been very positive.
There is also a network in this area called the Boston Environmental Education Network (BEEN) that includes folks from the zoo, the aquarium, Audubon, AMC, Boston Public Schools and lots of other organization. The network is new and still planning, but thus far seems to be a successful endeavor
I hope that's useful information to you. Let me know if you need more detail.

Dear Colleague;
The New York Hall of Science is developing a project that will
forge collaborations between
science museums and zoos/aquariums. I am interested to hear from you
about any experiences you may have had with such a collaboration. I
would appreciate it very much if you could take just a few minutes to
answer three questions or pass them to a colleague for answering. You
can answer off-line or on-line. I will collate answers and post them
as anonymous information to the list. Thank you in advance for your
time.
1. Have you or your institution been involved in collaboration on
joint programs with a zoo or aquarium? If you have, what were the
outcomes? What was the experience like?
2. If you have not been involved in a collaboration with a zoo or
aquarium, why not? What are some of the perceived barriers to working
together?
3. What interests you most about collaborating with a zoo or
aquarium? Why type of joint programming could you imagine? What
potential advantage do you see for your institution?
Cheers,
Martin
