ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

I will second (or third or fourth) the City Museum in St. Louis.
They feature an adult-sized hamster run that takes you along the
ceiling.
I also have fond memories of visiting the Santa Fe Children's
Museum. Not a lot of square footage, but they had a creative layout
that maximized the small space, and I particularly remember a neat
magnet table.
As for standards, I can tell you from a recent foray into graduate
research that the museum educators are almost entirely missing from
educational research literature found in major universities.
Students, teachers, and family groups are covered, but the work of
the educators themselves slips beneath the radar. I'm looking
forward to taking a look at the resources that have already been
mentioned, especially the reference lists.
