Michael Rabin recorded Paganini's first concerto (Goosens conducting)
in fine and clear stereo, 'though it's ADD. I imprinted on this version,
which is rich and sumptuous and second to none. Rabin's crowning
recording, afaic, though there are also plenty of bitty things by Paganini
(the Moto Perpetuo, all 24 Caprices) and by others (notably a jaw-dropping
version of Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee).
I think the First Concerto may only be available in a 6-CD set of Rabin's
recordings, or perhaps EMI has come to its senses about doing such a
disservice to him and us.
Salvatore Accardo did a set of all 6 concertos on DG; again ADD (if that
matters to you).
