If you can take the sound, my favourite version for many years has been the
Menuhin/Elgar recording, available on EMI. I know Menuhin was only 15, but
some people have simply "got it", whatever their age. The atmosphere in
this recording is just amazing.
Incidentally, Menuhin once asked why a computer could not be built that
used something musical as its operating system; he rather liked the idea
of something involving the concept of harmony doing the processing. Oddly
enough, if you take those lovely powers of 2 that make up the values of
binary digits, and use them individually as multipliers of a frequency you
get... perfect octaves.
Yours,
John Hayward-Warburton
