I have also heard Janos Starker 3 times and observed one of his master
classes. From what former students of his tell me, he has become a
pussycat compared to what he used to be...ruthlessly brutal. What I saw
in his master class, was that the better the student, the more demanding
he was, which certainly isn't a bad thing. (He does boast that his own
fingerings are the best for the Bach Cello Suites.)

I rode in an elevator with him before one of his performances. I could feel
the ominous waves being emitted. However, he was magnificent on stage. As
Chris Bond said, he's very business like, but the sound that he produces!
His clarity and...ability to communicate are mesmerizing.

I appreciate Chris Bond also mentioning that Starker feels that one should
always aim for at least sounding professional even if not always inspired.

My best regards,
