I like too Stefan Askenase, but maybe he can represent the formal side
of interpretation about it.I remember many years ago in a master class,
made in a recording,when he was explaining about the Chopin Berceuse a
very "formal" idea on the next fact: He said When you" repeat" the left
hand introduction prhase,please do not make it pianissimo,because it's
just unneccesary,that idea of "echo" brooke al the magic impression of a
beggining.And remember it is a Berceuse. He was very formal(against many
pianists who you use most times to make the whole contrary think),but at
the same time i think he had the neccesary introspection to "see" that kind
of things. Anyway,what i like most of him was his compromise with music
instead of bannal virtuosism, i Remember his interpretation of the 2nd
Chopin Concerto It was just wonderfull. Unfortunately i never heard the
Chopin Waltzes playing by him.
