Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium and Institute
of Popular Science [1939-1991] started a "Discovery
Lab" program in one of Buhl's classrooms [formerly
called "Lab 1"] in the late 1980s. The Discovery Lab
primarily demonstrated principles of the physical
sciences to visitors, including lasers, electronics
and electricity, etc. Also, a mini-planetarium dome
was included in the Discovery Lab. They did some
chemistry experiments as well.

The Discovery Lab did need to be staffed by a Buhl
Planetarium Floor staff person or by a volunteer.
Several volunteers made the Discovery Lab their
specialty.
