There is a diiference between beautiful music and expressive music,
although these categories are hardly mutually exclusive.

Vaughn William's "The Lark Acsending " is gorgeous, his Fourth Symphony
is not., but it is certainly worth listening to for its expressiveness.
In the realm of atonal and twelve tone music I think it best to take it
piece by piece.  I would rather have a root canal than to listen to Alban
Berg's " Wozzeck", but his Violin Concerto is wonderful.  (Needless to
say - in my not always humble opinion.
