I have been grooving on the music of Friedrich Gernsheim (1839-1916)
for quite a few months. I first discovered him at Berkshire Record
Outlet in a two- cd set of the complete symphonies on the Arte Nova
label. Here is the Amazon Url via classical.net
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000EQ47I6/classicalnet
Do you love Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Brahms? If your answer is a
resounding "wowee!" then run out and get this set! (I checked at Amazon
to see how available they are. The set I bought has been re-issued and
it is a budget buy, too! The Staatsphilharmonic Rheinland-Pfalz orchestra
is terrific, and the music is over the top.
Gernsheim also wrote string quartets, and one of them (op.31) is on
Audite 97.503 pared with Brahms op.51#1 played beautifully by the
Mandelring quartet.

The string quartet parts to this and (many!)other quartets are also
available at Merton Music (online catalog is here:)

I just noticed and purchased but haven't yet received the Gernsheim
cello concerto. It's on Volume 2 of the Hyperion Romantic Cello Concerto
series and contains works by Albert Dietrich, Robert Schumann and Robert
Volkmann. Ever more Romantic roads to explore!
