Bob,
That is not the point of course --as millions of our public obviously 
disagree with this assessment:

--National Treasure was the #1 video rental the year it was released.

--The tourism machines in both Philadelphia and Washington DC  have a 
tourism campaign based around the movie. (The Washington, DC Convention & 
Tourism Corporation (WCTC) and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing 
Corporation (GPTMC).

--Last October I staffed an Archaeology Month table in the Visitors Center 
at Independence National Historical Park during weekends. I meet dozens of 
people, both US residents and Oversees visitors, who were visiting 
Independence Park historic sites because of the movie! (The Eastern 
National Bookstores in the park sell the movie.)

Like with The Titanic, a pop culture movie is translating into public 
interest in history (e.g., Titanic: The Artifact Exhibit is a blockbuster, 
visitation number breaking, museum exhibit).
