Meli,

Although our tables are not yet ready for publication, the analysis of
faunal material from the 1858-1886 Ballast Point Whaling Station and Chinese
fishing camp (CA-SDI-12,953) yielded domesticated chicken bone. We also have a
wide variety of wild avian fauna in that deposit. Our challenge is to compare
the two cultural contexts (which were about 100-feet apart) to study the
relationships between the two cultural deposits. The 1870 U.S. Census of Industry
reported a Chinese cook at the Packard Brothers Company, so we expect
differences in butchering techniques, unless the cook adapted to the requests of his
employers. I have asked Paula Reynolds to look at our data and get back with
you on the chicken consumption.
