POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

COLLECTIONS MANAGER

Mount Vernon's Department of Preservation, comprising the Archaeology
and Restoration Divisions, seeks a Collections Manager to conduct a
two-year project to survey, organize, rehouse, and upgrade documentation
of the archaeological and restoration collections.  The goal of the
project is to create much needed storage space through the
identification and transfer of specific classes of materials to
alternate storage facilities, while providing organization and
documentation to these collections.

Under the direction of Mount Vernon staff, the collections manager will
be responsible for artifacts recovered during 20 years of archaeological
investigations, as well as architectural fragments comprising 70 years
of restoration work at George and Martha Washington's plantation.  The
successful candidate will work within the preservation department to
establish consistent protocols for the long-term storage of materials
and also serve as the department registrar, responsible for all loans
and research requests.

Experience supervising and conducting a collections assessment or
similar project is highly desired.  Applicants should have a Bachelor's
degree in anthropology/archaeology, historic preservation or a related
field, a graduate degree is preferred.  The successful candidate must
have a broad understanding of collection management issues and practical
solutions.  Experience working with archaeological collections is
required; experience with architectural fragments is a preferred.  

This is a two-year appointment with full benefits.
