Archeologist II * (Highway Archeologist) * with the Kansas State
Historical Society. This position carries out responsibilities
associated with the Society's contract archeology arm, which provides
Cultural Resource Management services to federal and federally funded
agencies including the Kansas Department of Transportation.
Responsibilities include supervising and conducting office reviews for
projects initiated by contracting agencies; carrying out field
investigations of archeological sites and cultural resources; testing
archeological sites to determine eligibility for listing on the National
Register of Historic Places and excavating sites to mitigate the effects
of project activities. Report writing is an important component of this
position. This position also conducts salvage excavations to investigate
and document archeological materials inadvertently unearthed after
projects are underway and includes supervising paid and volunteer
personnel and assisting State Archeologist in overseeing the budget and
scheduling for work within the archeology fee fund.
The successful applicant will meet the Secretary of the Interior's
Professional Qualifications Standards in the area of Archeology. See *

The applicant will have the following qualifications: a Master's degree
and independent work experience in archeological field research. The
successful applicant will have extensive knowledge of regional
prehistory and history and a familiarity with pertinent state and
federal regulations in addition to good written and verbal communication
skills and ability and knowledge to conduct fieldwork and prepare
subsequent reports.
