If you're referring to the set of five articles in HA 18(2) from 1984, I
don't believe that any of those involved a discussion of standard metal
detectors. They were all case studies derived from early uses of proton
magnetometers, including fancy new-fangled ones you could wear in a harness
while tramping through woods, and ground-penetrating radar.

I believe one of the early edited volumes in HA was devoted to remote
sensing on historic-period sites, and discussed metal detectors,
especially in regard to locating concentrations of structural metal
(iron nails) as a way of finding structure locations within a site. The
volume is 20 years old, or close to it, but it is one of the earliest
discussions of the subject.

Subject: Question RE metal detectors
Dear List members,
I am looking into the use of metal detectors on historic sites as a
method to identify subsurface artifacts; in this case looking to locate
a possible early 18th century structure.
Can anyone please recommend (off-list is fine)any studies or other
references to the use of metal detectors in historic archaeological
settings?
Thanks in advance,
Elizabeth Hoag, RPA
