Don't know exactly, more having to do I think with the popularity of
the large Bronx Botanical Gardens abutting and north of the Bronx Zoo
along the Bronx River. The oldest motor "Parkway" in the US, the Bronx
River Parkway, runs along the east border of both parks, apparently
the river course altered. It was mis-perceived in the American
Revolution, a British generals orders stating that he he sail up it to
White Plains and defeat the rebels, although today one could ride a
bicycle to White Plains along the "Greenway". I am hoping they put up
a bike rack at both parks someday.
