ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE
SOCIETY FOR HISTORICAL ARCHAEOLOGY AWARDS
TO BE PRESENTED IN 2006 IN SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
The Society for Historical Archaeology and its
Awards Committee are pleased to announce the
honors to be presented in January 2006 at the SHA
Annual Meetings in Sacramento, California.
President Judith A. Bense will present the
following awards during the conference.
J. C. Harrington Award
Donald L. Hardesty, University of Nevada at Reno
Don Hardesty has had tremendous impact on
generations of students and established almost
single-handedly the field of nineteenth and
twentieth century industrial archaeology in
Nevada. He has been formally recognized by his
university as an outstanding researcher and
teacher. His list of published work is lengthy
and impressive; in addition to dozens of book
chapters and journal articles, it includes
influential monographs such as The Archaeology of
Mining and Miners (1988), Archaeology of the
Donner Party (1997), Assessing the Archaeological
Significance of Historical Sites (with Barbara
Little, 2000). Hardesty has been instrumental in
ensuring that historic resources are given full
consideration in the federal cultural resource
management process in Nevada and elsewhere; he
has always worked closely with federal agencies
in long-term cooperative agreements that embed
high-quality research in cultural resource
management projects. Don Hardesty's lasting
legacy is further represented by the many
graduate students who have benefited from his
tutelage and who now work as private and public
sector archaeologists throughout the American
West. Don's lifetime of dedication to the
highest principles of scholarship and mentoring
exemplify historic archaeology at its finest.
