When I was a youth (even more callow than I am now) and just starting
to find music to listen to, the 'warhorses' were all 'program' music:
Pictures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain, 1812, Capriccio
Italien, Pathetique, Unfinished, Moonlight, Kinderszenen... Dvorak's
9th was not just a symphony, but the 'New World' symphony. Not just
Scheherezade, but a lot more Rimsky: Capriccio Espanol, The Golden
Cockerel...
I remember once babysitting for some friends of my parents. I told the
kids the stories I had got from reading record album liner notes, about
firebirds and invisible cities. Next time I saw their father he asked
me where I'd got those stories from. The kids were still talking about
them.
