i think i usually cite a reference from barker; can't find it off-hand but could dig it up easily; usually use it to show that the brits colour-code significant finds whereas german practice is usually to use naturalistic colours for the whole site (i have also seen some great drawings from poland; but you need artists...)
i mean the primary documentation (watercolours) from hallstatt is great, but who has the time/talent to do stuff like that these days?
some of my dutch soil scientists also use codes for composition (varying shades of green and blue according to sand content, etc.)
then there's the wheeler hatching, which is vaguely similar to ISO standards for clay, sand, etc.
