CALL FOR PAPERS/POSTERS
BRIDGING THE GAP:
CURRENT ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH
IN THE UPPER MIDWEST
February 25-26, 2005
Fort Snelling History Center
Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Council for Minnesota Archaeology solicits papers or posters to be presented at a two-day symposium on current archaeological research in the Upper Midwest. "Bridging the Gap" has been chosen for the theme because the symposium is designed to bring together research on Prehistoric and Historic periods, as well as academics and cultural resource management archaeologists, to collectively inform one another in an open professional environment.
Individual contributions:
Papers: Theoretical, methodological, or data-synthesizing presentations focused on the Midwestern region. This also includes topical subjects based upon completed research (20 minutes).
Posters/Media Displays: Wall mounted or freestanding exhibits with text and graphics, videotapes, etc., that illustrate ongoing or completed research projects are encouraged. Posters should be of a reasonable size (not larger than 4'x 6'). Wall space and tables will be provided; additional electronic equipment needed may be available upon request. Authors are expected to set up their own displays and be present at their display during the session, as well as provide their own mounting supplies. A two-hour time slot will be scheduled for each poster session.
Student Paper Competition
Undergraduate students at academic institutions in the Upper Midwest are encouraged to submit papers. If a sufficient number of student submittals are received, the symposium committee will select one paper to receive a cash award of $250.00. Singled-authored papers are preferred, although up to three authors is acceptable. The paper must reflect original research and be a suitable length for a 20-minute presentation (about 13 pages).
Audiovisual Equipment: A 35-mm carousel slide projector, laptop projector, laser pointer, microphone, and lectern will be provided in the auditorium. Presenters are expected to bring slides pre-loaded in their own 80-slot carousels or their own laptop computers.
Deadline: Please submit an abstract no more than 200 words in length to the appropriate section chair. Abstracts are due no later than January 15, 2005. Electronic format (text, Word or PDF file) is required.
Prehistoric section: David Mather, chair: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
Historic section: Jeremy Nienow, chair: [log in to unmask]
Those individuals who submit a final copy of their presented papers (preferably in PDF file format), if interested, will be able to have their paper placed on one of two (Prehistoric or Historic) CMA Symposium CDs which will be created one to two months after the symposium.
Session Schedule: The conference program chairs will group papers into four general sessions organized by prehistoric / historic material, topic, or time period. Conference on-line abstracts / general sessions schedule will be available for review by the first week in February.
More information about the symposium is available on the CMA website: http://www.mnarchaeology.org/<http://www.mnarchaeology.org/>.
