Out here in the Far Southwest, cisterns were placed underground and where
rainwater from the roof could collect. Although most I have seen were circular, I
am sure the terrain and stiffness of the ground to be excavated would factor
into the actual form. I would not rule out a cistern as a possible
interpretation.
