First of all, I need to correct Ron's incorrect
comment that, "...They produced it at the time Spain
invaded California and enslaved coastal people into
the Roman Catholic mission system...."

The missionaries did not "enslave" anyone. There were
far too few soldiers and friars to get the local
Indians to obey them as slaves. This is a out and out
lie, perpetuated by the anti-Mission crowd. [And, we
have the archaeological evidence to prove this from
both Mission San Antonio de Padua and Mission San Luis
Rey.]

Secondly, almost all the Native Californians had a
tradition of pottery. It is in those areas where there
is no local tradition (as in the area around Mission
San Antonio) that the plainware should be carefully
studied.

The term "colonoware" cannot be used in California, IMHO.
