I recently saw at Borders a two-fer of Joshua Rifkin doing famous Bach
cantatas such as 78, 147, and 80. I was tempted because I want these
cantatas but balked because he is one voice to a part as I remember.
This is not my cup of tea especially compared to the expressiveness of
Herreweghe or Suzuki. What do people think of Rifkin and the one voice
to a part approach? I believe Bach used several boys for each part so
it seems historically false as well as a little whitebread. I will be
very interested in the list's opinion of this issue. Thanks for your
comments in advance.
