Most of the recent discussion of Nielsen has centered on his symphonies
and concertos. Perhaps less contentious are his wind quintet, a work
that has wit and a lot of charm, and the Helios Overture, for my money
one of the great tone poems, despite its title.
A flute-playing friend was once learning the Nielsen concerto and asked
me if I liked it. I said I'd only heard it once and didn't think much
of it. "Then you weren't listening properly - try again." I did and
found that she was right.
