Keith,
I might add that Richard Gartley and Jeff Carskadden (1998) also
published a book entitled "Colonial Period and Early 19th-Century
Children's Toy Marbles: History and Identifications for the
Archaeologist and Collector," The Muskingum Valley Archaeological
Survey, Zanesville, Ohio. It has a chapter on "Genuine Stone Marbles of
the Colonial period and Early 19th Century." It also has many good
color images of marbles.
Best,

Subject: Marble references
I am finally working on site that has yielded porcelain and stone
marbles. I have Mark Randall's 1971 article on early marbles in
Historical Archaeology. I have searched the web for books on marbles
hoping to find more recent and detailed information. I can't tell by
the descriptions what the quality of information the collector's
literature has. Does anyone out there have a reference or references
they are happy with or prefer.?
