Greetings and Happy Holidays from A*NCCC! We continued our work on
Presidio Hill and began excavating three new rooms in the North Wing.
This week was incredibly busy for us. Besides clearing vegetation from the
western half of the north wing, over 200 students visited the site on
Thursday, November 30, for an introduction to practical archaeology and
tours at the site. In addition to the daily visit of four classes of
fourth graders from the Old Town School, two schools participated in the
S. D. Presidio's One-day Archaeology Workshop.
Our site is trying to actively involve students in archaeology.
The workshop is open to kids ages 9-18. Students are divided into crews
of five or six and given assignments of crew chief, recorder, sergeant at
arms, and excavator. They typically spend two hours excavating and tour
the site with corps members. We have handled up to 90 students at a time
by breaking them into two groups, one for excavation and one for site
tours. We limit the number of student excavators at any one time to 45.
Each crew is assigned one corps member, who works side by side with the
students.
To date, five elementary schools have participated in the program,
with students that range in age from nine to twelve. Since the first
workshop in October, we have not had time to actually advertise the
program, but we continue to get requests for information on a weekly
basis. From all accounts, it appears to be quite a success.
