Although written 45 years ago when no one was paying serious attention to
these kinds of things, there's still some nifty stuff -- bibliographic
references included -- about tin cans (including a summary of their history,
humor included) by Cameron Greenleaf in "Johnny Ward's Ranch" (Kiva, Vol.
28, nos. 1-2, Oct-Dec., 1962), that pioneering report on "tin can
archaeology," as it used to be called.
