How does this happen again? A mom was induced because the MD said the baby
would be 10 lbs--no, he weighted 7 + lbs. Mom and baby was discharged without
the baby ever nursing-told to rent a pump and give pumped milk. Ped said he
would see the baby in 2 weeks. Mom lives on a barrier island. I went to see
the baby as a friend on day 4. Baby is not nursing, mom is pumping and also
letting grandmother give ABM in bottle at night so mom can rest. She did not
want my help even though I offered a consult as a baby gift. Baby was the color
of very ripe squash and very sleepy. I did feel an obligation to discuss
jaundice and dehydration management, warning signs, etc. The hospital had not
given any information on this. The baby is getting a bottle every 4-5 hours. Of
course this is the hospital where my daughter delivered and even with me
standing there, after being identified as an IBLC, the nurse still told her she
needed to give water because it is so hot at the beach.
Why does this continue to happen? Would this facility discharge a surgery
patient without discharge teaching? If the baby had surgery, wouldn't they have
given instructions for infection control?
This hospital is a satellite hospital of the one here in my town which has
formed a committee to apply for Baby Friendly status. They just don't get it.
To be Baby Friendly means that babies need to be breastfeeding--not pumping
and drinking from a bottle, not given ABM gift bags so the moms will have it
handy, not using nipple shields ( now rampant in our town), and mothers have
to be educated and helped to breastfeed when problems occur.
URRRRRRH! ( big growl)
