In response to your observation:
"........it is not that the museum "flunks" the visitor, but that the
museum "flunks" in the mind of the visitor. I believe that if
something provokes a response in the visitor, either pro or con, then
that thing has succeeded in some measure. The failure is when the
response to the object or program is indifference."
I think that it varies greatly with the degree of the in-built
self-assurance of the visitor. Some take set-backs in life in their
strides, while others feel destroyed by the same experiences. In our
museums, I think we have to be very mindful of the more vulnerable people
in our audiences (tho' this carried too far can make us pretty tepid).
