Hi Scott,

Several years ago tried building an exhibit at a large history museum
where visitors started at the present and gradually moved back in time
as they progressed through the exhibit. It didn't work. People were
confused as most of us (apparently) cannot back up time in this orderly
way (unless they've studied Rudolf Steiner). Folks seem to need to see a
natural forward running of time and in western culture this also means
left to right. It's OK to compare times occasionally (i.e., 1860 versus
1960, for example) but try to keep the general timeline flowing left to
right. 

Charlie's comments about unfamiliar references are also important to
remember. My advice is to test your ideas on someone (or even a small
group or people) who have no knowledge of your subject. This process
will quickly expose problems before you build something expensive.

I am getting conflicting information regarding Timelines in exhibits.


Do visitors like timelines?

Do visitors connect/understand/read timelines?

What makes a successful timeline?

Are there papers, evaluations, etc., that you would recommend reading?
