Hi Jonah,
You may want to talk with Karen Bertschi at OMSI who has prototyped a sand
and water-play activity. Very dangerous combo! Bay Area has a wonderful
gravel play area if your interested. Last though is to talk to talk to
folks who do playground design about sand-play. Literature from the
European adventure playgrounds is good for both sand and soil play. Roger
Hart from CUNY has some older articles on that.
