Dear Summer:

I understand that this replay comes very, very late and your intention
was to do a "quick one", however, your note had a tremendous influence
on my family life and led to intense discussions (my wife is a political
scientist and I am an engineer). So here is our result:

Although scientists are of importance for the development of our world,
they are not the ones who define the overall direction, because their
power is usually rather limited. If Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak had
lived in the soviet union, for example, their influence on the future of
the world would have been totally different. So I think people like
Michael Gorbatschow, the initiator of Glasnost and Perestroika, made the
most notable contributions to the future of our world. Imagine how many
European countries are free now! Gorbatschow is the one who changed a
continent, steered societies, set the framework for scientist and gave
them the chance to work properly in favor of mankind. As an European I
may add politely, that this is true in particular with regards to the
American debate about Intelligent Design vs Evolution.

Sincerely,
Axel E.
