If I remember correctly, the Arthur Loesser Bach recordings (There also
is a set of the French Suites.) were private recordings for the Cleveland
Institute of Music, where he taught, and they became such a cult item
that the WTC was issued commercially by Telarc.

I recall the performances as being of a very high standard.
